I didn't see this in the theater but watched it half a dozen times on cable. I adored the look of this movie and the dangerous sweetness of the male characters against the artifice of the protagonist's premise.

And I loved that the piece was presented in naked earnest, and not with irony. It was a kooky homage where it could have been a punchline smirk.

I was born in 1960 and remember the style of films of that era. This film evoked the child who wanted nothing more than a Calderesque gooseneck floor lamp and an Eames lounge chair. Rosie! Bring me my slippers!

Sure, most critics buried the film, but Jonathan Rosenbaum (with the Chicago Reader at the time) loved it. In my book that makes up for the rest of the critics.

I feel something similar to the mid-'80s Michael Mann police drama Crime Story, which was set in an incredibly stylized version of early to mid-'60s Chicago and then Las Vegas: all of the cars bore half an inch of wax, and many of the houses appeared to be five minutes from a visit by the Rat Pack for martinis and repartee.

That said, my own bungalow dates from the Eisenhower era, and on moving into it, I couldn't for the life of me understand why the prior owners had carpeted the gorgeous hardwood flooring. That shit went south, fast.

Very interesting article. I agree, I think there is a real fetishizing of MCM design. And interestingly, there are a lot of very young people (20's-30's) who seem at the head of this pack. I, on the other hand, am in my mid-40's and so having been born in 1962, I grew up with this look (not in my parents house, however) and think of it as just old and dated. Funny.

But,I did love the Down With Love sets. Thanks for linking to my posts on these!
