The Frank Lloyd Wright Legacy Continues
Posted on June 9th, 2009 3 commentsIn celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Guggenheim Museum building, The Daily Beast offers up a piece about the battles between Frank Lloyd Wright and then-curator, James Sweeney.
And rather than add to decades of “told you so” over the difficulty of using this building for its intended purpose, I’ll just resurrect this bit:
A Case Against Frank Lloyd Wright: Architect.

Hi Toby – I have to admit that I love the Guggenheim. It was a cool experience to view art that way. However, your linked article mentions concerns about having enough room to view the art. Funny story – when I was there years ago I was backing up to view a large painting better and inadvertently tripped over a piece of art on the floor and sent a little piece of it skittering across the floor!! No damage was done except to my ego when I was unceremoniously escorted out of the museum! I guess that proves the point.

I have yet to see a single FLW chair that looks as if I could safely and comfortably occupy it.

We’re very fortunate the building didn’t turn out looking like the rendering here.
It’s a powerful building and architectural space. Clearly not 100% functional. That’s what you get for experimentation by someone labeled a “genius.”
