Spread the love

The current issue of Arch City Chronicles features a piece I did on Demetrie Kabbaz, the man behind the mysterious Marilyn Shrine. It was a nice way to formally honor the man behind the art that kept me enthralled for so long.

Here’s the story, in original blog entry order:

May 10, 2005
May 29, 2005
August 4, 2005
September 25, 2005
October 23, 2005

And here’s to many more reels in the Technicolor MGM musical that is Kabbaz!

  1. I grew up with Demetri. I lived next door and we used to sit on his front steps on Geyer avenue and he would draw charcoal portraits of me. One from when I was about 11 he gave me to give to my family. They were so surprised about his awesome talent. My mom asked his family if she could take that portrait of me and Demetri and myself ( for comparison ) somewhere on Grand Avenue one Saturday morning. I remember going in a large office and sitting there and somehow I think Demetrie got recognized for a program for artists, Not clear from what I remember, but we both grew up and went to Roosevelt High school, till later he went to Bishop Du Borg his last yr or so. I remember his obsession with Marilyn Monroe because he called me to go outside in the back yard hidden by the garage one morning in secret as he wanted to show me a magazine he got ahold of. It was a back and white photo of a naked Marilyn as the centerfold. I was young about 11 and was shocked to see my first nudie pic of anyone.. He said it was taken long before she became famous and I think he said her name was Norma Jean.
